For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light
The Bible is literally filled with the notions of light and dark, even from the first verses to the last ones. A contradiction is being made, but it is more than just a literal light and darkness which is being spoken of. Rather, the Bible is quite often speaking of these terms in a figurative sense. For you were once darkness. This implies to the reader that it was their very nature. And it’s true, the darkness was our nature. We were consumed with sin and could do nothing but pursue sin. So how can God say that we are light? God calls us light because he lives with us. He has sent his Holy Spirit to live in our hearts. And because God himself is light, then we too are people of the light. God promises that he will help us to overcome darkness through his Spirit. And because we are children of the light, we must live in a way that shows this. Then we will shine to the world around us, and they will be able to see that we belong to God. So, how do we know how God wants us to live? Just read the Bible. The Bible has been given to us as a light to guide our path. In the Bible we can learn how we can live as children of God; as children of the light. And then we must pray for the Holy Spirit to help us live as children of the light.
