The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.
Throughout his life, the truth of God that was faithfully taught by Jeremiah the prophet, was rejected and ridiculed by all and sundry. This was bad enough, but when He saw the destruction and devastation of Jerusalem, he fell into deep depression and wept and mourned over the ruins of the beautiful city of God. However, in his distress hope was revived as Jeremiah looked away from himself to the Lord, and called to mind the loving-mercies, deep-compassion, and long-suffering of God for all His rebellious people. And so he declares this beautiful truth: “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; His mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is His faithfulness.” How often our own lives reflect this scene. We fulfill God’s call on our life, but discover that circumstances appear to contradict our expectations, and we start to question God’s character, God’s concern, and God’s care for us, so we start to murmur and to ask, “Why?” But only as we look away from ourselves, our problems, and our own limited perspectives, and call to mind the greater reality of His loving-mercies, deep-compassion, and long-suffering, do we recognize the steadfast love of the Lord which never ceases. Only as we turn our eyes away from our own disappointments and look to His wider purpose and plan, do we discover that His mercies never come to an end, for they are new every morning. However deep, dark, and dangerous the circumstances of life are, we are told that the steadfast love of God never ceases towards us. No matter how bleak and evil the world situation becomes, we have God’s unfailing reassurance that His mercy and compassion are new every morning. Our unbelief looks at the overwhelming circumstances in our own lives and the tremendous troubles raging in the wider world and we feel hopeless and depressed. Our emotions ebb and flow as we fluctuate between two opinions and question God’s goodness depending upon our feelings or our fortune. But a life of faith cannot be founded on the shifting sands of doubt and disappointment, but needs to be secured to the changeless foundation of Jesus Christ Who is the same yesterday, today, and forever, for His steadfast love never ceases. His mercies never come to an end; His gracious compassion is new every morning. QGod’s mercy and compassion is new every morning. God’s steadfast love comes even in times of trials and tribulations. Like a father, God may discipline us when we’ve done wrong, however He never stops loving us. We do a lot of things that deserve punishment. Mercy…God’s mercy…is Him withholding just punishment. God’s mercy is ever-present, but the form it takes is ever-changing. With every morning, nature offers us new reasons to be grateful. The sun rises. A bird sings in a tree that sways in the gentle breeze blowing. How could we be ungrateful? We shouldn’t be. No matter how dark your days may seem, it is through God’s mercies that we are not destroyed; because His mercies never fail. Great is thy faithfulness.
