Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.
I love the book of Proverbs. The book of Proverbs shows us the right way to deal with the various situations in our lives. It shows us how to interact with others, whether they are easy to get along with or if they are difficult. This verse is a simple verse, but contains a powerful message that guides our hearts and helps us live a victorious life. It teaches us to guard over the entrance of our hearts. This entrance is the doorway through which things get in and out of it. We are to guard our hearts against what comes in and only allow that which builds us up; that which makes us stronger. We must filter out what corrupts our hearts. Corruption comes through what we watch, listen to, do, and the sins that we commit. If we let in ungodly things, we become ungodly. It really is that simple; if we let in godly things, we become more godly. When your heart is full of God’s Word, you are storing good things and protecting yourself against false testimony. Putting a guard in the doorway of our hearts is a way of protecting ourselves from deceit, heartbreak, and restricting ideology that takes away the joy from our lives. Our hearts carry the burdens and the details of our lives. That is why it’s so hard to live a joyful life with a broken heart. Our hearts are our lives because our lives are directed by what is in our hearts. Keeping our hearts with diligence will mean we only allow into it what will help us become more godly, loving, confident, and will help us grow. Jesus came to heal the brokenhearted so that we can live a full life. Even where bad things happen to us, we can guard our hearts by focusing on what God says about our lives.
