Let your eyes look directly forward, and your gaze be straight before you. Ponder the path of your feet; then all your ways will be sure. Do not swerve to the right or to the left; turn your foot away from evil.
What is the first thing you are told when you learning to hit a baseball? “Keep your eye on the ball.” If you want to hit the ball, you must keep your eye on it. You must not lose focus. Same logic applies when following Jesus. Ever heard the song, “Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus?” That’s what this is referring to. Jesus is the one to whom we must turn our focus. I remember once as a kid, I was out in the ocean, riding the waves on my boogie board. I was having a blast. Then, I look up and I didn’t recognize anything on the beach. My parents had disappeared! I start to panic. Well my parents, doing what parents are supposed to do, were watching me. They watched the waves carry me down the beach a little ways as is the nature of the ocean. My mom walked down the beach to yell for me and I saw her and I was instantly relieved. As we walked back to our spot on the beach, I noticed the waves coming in at an angle and it made sense to me after that. From that moment on, I kept my gaze up to the beach to see where my parents were while I was in the ocean. Our walk with Jesus is no different. It requires commitment and concentration. We must focus on Him or those waves will push us toward evil. If you follow Jesus, He will make your paths sure and straight. So “Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus.”
