Psalm 139:23–24

Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting!

I hate to admit it, but it’s actually easy to go through my day without thinking about how pleasing my ways might be to the Lord. My day is typically filled with activities that, at least on the surface, would seem good. I spend time in prayer and Bible study every day. I write about what I have read and share it with whomever wants to read it. I go to work, I take care of my daughter, and I’m there for my friends and family when they need me. I live what seems like a good and decent life. But, this verse reminds me that there’s more to life than all that. It reminds me that we all should be mindful to the conditions of our hearts. To be conscious of our everyday thoughts. To be considerate when we interact with those around us. David’s prayer should be our prayer. We need to ask God to search our hearts. Ask Him to reveal our offensive thoughts and attitudes that have no business in our lives. Ask Him to purify our hearts. To give us the words and meditation that is pleasing to Him. Three simple steps…Ask God, Listen to Him, Follow Him. A self-led person is heading toward devastation. It is better to be led by God who sees our beginning and our end. If He can speak to the waves and bring peace, then he can speak to our muddled souls and bring order.
