The Lord is my light and my salvation;
whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?
David’s great confidence in the Lord is expressed in this exquisite verse: “The Lord is my light and my salvation; Whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of Whom shall I be afraid?” The struggling Psalmist may be shrouded in spiritual darkness or be facing a black night of deep despair or despondency, and yet he does not shrink from rejoicing in the God of his salvation with an explosion of praise, for he is confident that God is his light in Whom there is no darkness at all, and the Lord is his Savior so he has nothing to fear. In this verse, David expresses an assurance that nothing can extinguish as he joyfully acknowledges the light of life that surrounds him. So firm is his trust in the Word of the Lord, that he declares unashamedly that nothing can eclipse the glorious, golden rays of God’s love upon those that are called by His name. Nothing in heaven above, the earth beneath, or the waters under the earth is so terrifying that it can blot out the promises of our Creator God, for He is the stronghold of our life. He is the rock upon which we stand, and nothing can separate us from the love of God. In Him is security and salvation for all who believe, for by Him, sin and death has been conquered through the sacrificial offering of Himself for each of us. And through Him, we have access to our Father in heaven for He is the one way, the only truth, and the only revealed Word of God. When we are led and guided by His eternal light, the light of His love floods our soul with the divine light of a heavenly birth so that He dispels all darkness, comforts all sorrows, calms our fears, and guides us into the paths of righteousness and truth. He is not only our light and salvation, but He is our light and life, our strength and peace, our salvation and our God. There is nothing in heaven or earth, visible or invisible, that should disturb our hearts or cause us to be afraid, for He is the omnipotent Creator and all the strength of our lives and the illumination for our path derives directly from Him. If we just follow David’s example and walk in the light and trust His Word, we shall not walk in darkness but shall have the light of life. When we put the Lord Jesus into proper perspective and see Him for Who He truly is, we should neither fear man nor dread the unknown. Rather, we should rejoice in the God of our salvation who has brought us out of darkness into His glorious light: “For if God is for us who can be against us?”
